Independence Day

So many beautiful memories come to mind when I think of John. In his earlier years, he brought people together through music as a concert promoter, helping create events like Alberta Jam I, II, and III. Promoting bands with incredible talent like, ZZ Top, The Charlie Daniels Band and Cheap Trick. That concert was John’s first date with Carmen and his way of trying to make an impression. That was John, generous, spirited, and full of life.

As we sat together remembering him, I found myself playing two songs: Independence Day (Martina McBride) and in addition to that, the song my sister wrote for John, Angels. When Carmen asked if I would play them at his Celebration of Life, held on April 13, his birthday, it felt deeply meaningful. Music has a way of expressing what words sometimes cannot, and those choices spoke straight from the heart.

We all find our own meaning in the songs that move us. Choosing Independence Day felt especially fitting, a quiet reflection of release, of peace, of a soul no longer burdened.

After three difficult years, John is finally free from pain and suffering. And on his birthday, we didn’t just mourn; we honored him, celebrated him, and held close the life he lived and the love he gave.

His spirit lives on, now lighter, freer, and at peace.
